Home: Amosite Asbestos

Amosite is an amphibole from Africa and is the second most prevalent type of asbestos found in building materials. Amosite is also known as "brown asbestos". Mesotheliomas have been observed after occupational exposure to amosite asbestos.

Brown or gray, straight amosite fibers belong in the amphibole group, and containing iron and magnesium. Amosite is a commonly commercially-used synonym of grunerite first used by Hall. It may also be ferro-anthophyllite. Amphibole fibers, such as amosite asbestos, generally tend to be straight and splintery, and amosite fibers are larger in diameter than those of both crocidolite and chrysotile. Amosite is known mineralogically as grunerite.
