TENS Therapy
For those suffering from cancer, some of the most valuable treatment is that which relieves pain. This is especially true for patients of mesothelioma, whose cancer and chemotherapy can often be accompanied by pain and discomfort. What's important is providing enough comfort to patients to the point where they can spend time with their family and doing things they enjoy. Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) therapy is one such method of attaining this level of palliative comfort. Palliative care is in no way intended to treat the cancer, but is intended to assist in the lessening of discomfort to make the battle with the disease somewhat more manageable.
What is TENS therapy? In simple terms TENS therapy uses a small conductor of electricity to send electrical impulses through the body. These impulses stimulate the nerves in such a way so that they are not as reactive to pain signals, leaving the person's pain lessened or eliminated for a short period of time. Acute pain is most often treated with TENS therapy, as it is a temporary solution. Some physicians will actually recommend TENS therapy as a form of massage.
What can patients expect during a TENS therapy session. A small electrical transmitter is attached to the patient's skin through electrodes around the source of pain. The transmitter then sends a very mild current of electricity between the electrodes. Most patients will say they feel a mild tingling sensation or a warming effect not unlike disposable heat packs. These sessions may last anywhere from 5-15 minutes depending on how the patient is responding to the treatment. These treatments can usually be applied as often as necessary. Patients may visit a TENS specialist or rent the equipment themselves under prescription from a physician.
TENS therapy is not for everyone and patients should speak to their doctors before using any therapy outside their prescribed treatment regimen. Patients who have pre-existing heart conditions should or use a pacemaker should not use TENS therapy because a disturbance that affect the function of their heart. If patients feel TENS therapy may be right for them, they should speak with their doctors and see if they're a appropriate candidate.
